5 Things to Know About Apple Pay and the Technology Involved
Apple’s mobile payment system, Apple Pay, saves you time, keeps you secure, and is sure to change the future of how we pay for things. Here’s what you need to know about this innovative way to pay.
1. Not compatible with all devices.
Apple Pay is increasingly becoming one of the most successful payment solutions of its kind, but it can only be used on iPhone 6 and higher, newer generations of iPad, Apple Watch, and Mac. Unfortunately, older equipment is not compatible with Near-Field-Communication (NFC) technology. If you already have a new Apple device, just access the Wallet app and follow the instructions to add your United Texas debit and credit cards.
2. Old school idea, new approach.
Apple Pay uses a method called ‘tokenization’ to ensure secure payments. This process substitutes secure data for non-secure data, much like exchanging money for tokens at an arcade. You can still play the arcade games with the tokens (non-secure data), but the arcade machine never comes into contact with the real money (secure data).
3. Innovative methods.
The Apple Pay app links a token and a one-time security code to your real account and transmits it to the point of sale terminal. The terminal takes that token and sends it to a secure database also known as the ‘token vault.’ From there the token vault directs the token to your linked card(s) where you’ll receive a transaction charge while the terminal receives verification of payment.
4. Most secure way to pay.
Apple Pay’s tokenization ensures that your sensitive data is only seen by the payment processor and your financial institution, eliminating the terminal and one less possibility for a data breach. The process excludes Apple’s servers which means there’s no way to track your purchases and behavior, giving you total privacy.
5. Can be used just about anywhere
Keep an eye out for Apple Pay at grocery stores, hotels, retail, restaurants and much more. It is also accepted in all kinds of apps and participating websites using Safari. You can also use Apple Pay to make donations to nonprofit organizations.

FAQs
-
Is Apple Pay secure?
Yes, your card and identity aren’t shared with the merchant, and your actual card numbers aren’t stored on your device or on Apple servers. Additionally, your phone must be unlocked in order to complete a transaction, which provides another layer of security.
-
What happens if I lose my device?
If your phone is ever lost or stolen, you may use Apple’s “Find My Phone” app to quickly put your device in lost mode to lock or erase your device. In addition, because sensitive card information is not stored directly on the phone, you will not have to cancel the card.
-
Does Apple have the ability to trace or track my transactions?
Apple itself has no idea what purchases you’re making because it uses payment processors to complete all transactions, not Apple servers. It can’t track your behavior based on your Apple Pay transactions.
-
Can I use Samsung Pay at all stores?
In addition to the Near Field Communication (NFC) contactless payment method, Samsung Pay supports Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST) technology. MST technology is accepted at nearly all payment terminals* with a card reader.
*Some payment terminals may require software updates.
-
What is MST (Magnetic Secure Transmission)?
MST is a technology that emits a magnetic signal that mimics the magnetic strip on a traditional payment card. MST sends a magnetic signal from your device to the payment terminal’s card reader (to emulate swiping a physical card without having to upgrade the terminal’s software or hardware). MST technology is accepted at nearly all payment terminals with a card reader. Some payment terminals may require software updates. Simply select a card from Samsung Pay, and transmit the payment information by moving your device within an inch of the payment terminal. Your transaction and payment information will be kept private and secure with the use of tokenization. MST is more secure than using a traditional payment card and is as secure as paying with Near Field Communication (NFC).

United Texas recommends that you select “credit” when paying with a debit card, because older merchant payment terminals may not always work successfully with debit cards in Apple Pay.
