3 Things You Should Know About EMV Chip Cards
In the last couple of years, cards with chips have been replacing standard magnetic cards. Here’s the reason for the switch, and what it means for you.
1. They protect against fraud
Credit card fraud is a real problem in the US, so EMV cards have been issued to help combat it. One of the difficulties with magnetic cards is that they store static data. That data is given to the machine readers each time a transaction is made, making it much easier to steal.
In contrast, EMV cards use a chip to create a unique code for every transaction. This code helps protect the information on the card from being stolen.
2. They have different regulations
For EMV cards, the person responsible for covering the charges is whomever is “least EMV compliant”. This means if you go to a store without a chip reader, then that store will be responsible in the event your information is stolen.
On the other hand, if your financial institution doesn’t issue you an EMV card, then they will be held responsible for the charges instead. You should rest assured that you will not be held responsible for fraudulent or unauthorized transactions in either scenario.
3. They don’t make a difference online
Even though EMV cards offer additional protections in the real world, they don’t make a difference online. This is important to remember as you make online purchases. Always use good judgment and never enter your credit card information on a site that seems suspicious.
