How to Build Your Credit Like a Pro
Whether your credit is good, bad or non-existent, it has a big impact on your life — probably bigger than you think. Your credit score gets around. Your boss has seen it. Your landlord has seen it. And if you want to buy a house or a car, apply for certain jobs, or take out a student loan, that number is going to get peeped at by many more people. Higher scores mean higher credit limits and loan amounts, better interest rates and more opportunities. But how do you get a high credit score? More importantly, how do you keep it there? Read on for three tips to help you build healthy, sky-high credit.
Pay Your Bills on Time
It may seem overly simple, but you’d be surprised how many people screw this up. (We’ve all been there.) Stay on top of utility payments, tuition bills and credit card payments to keep your credit score high. Even if you’ve fallen behind in the past, two years worth of of on-time payments is all you need to get the credit benefits of payment punctuality.
Be Stingy with Your Credit History
Before you co-sign on that friend’s loan, think about about how many hits you’ve had on your credit history lately. Have you checked your credit score? Turned in an application for an apartment? Purchased a car? Opened a new line of credit? Even if they’re offering sweet discounts every other Tuesday, you may want to say no to that store credit card. You’ll thank us later.
Use Your Credit Cards…And Your Brain
It’s great to have credit cards, both to build your credit score and to bail you out in emergencies. But remember, they’re not magic. Every time you whip one out, a bill turns up in the mail. Still, people who use their credit cards — and pay their bills on time — have a higher credit score than people who don’t use them at all. So use credit cards to buy your gas or groceries, and pay down your bill every month.
