3 Keys to Cash Flow Budgeting
Traditional budgets can be quite the drain on your time. You have to separate out each part of your expenses, find a way to keep those parts separate, and then track them all individually. If you are tired of stuffing envelopes, then cash flow budgeting may be for you. It’s a simple way to budget based on how most businesses moderate their expenses.
1. Make your savings automatic
This is the primary key to cash flow budgeting. Each month, you set aside an amount to save as soon as you get paid. You can do this by setting up an automatic transfer from your checking account to your savings. Once that amount is set aside, it should be out of your checking account and not revisited again that month.
2. Pay your top priorities
Once you’ve set your savings aside, you pay your top priorities. This includes your rent bill, your utility bill, your health insurance premium, etc. These amounts are your fixed costs, and again, you should set up automatic payments for them, if possible.
If you have an upcoming trip or important event, set aside money for that too.
3. Spend your leftovers
Once you have covered your savings and top priorities, you are free to spend what’s left over. You don’t need to itemize costs for clothing, eating out, activities, etc. The limited funds you have left over act as your catch all budget. Just be aware that you’ll have less and less cash as the month goes by, and plan accordingly.
